Manhattan Kansas
The county seat of Riley County, Manhattan is a thriving
town of more than 50,000 people. Located in the northeastern part of
the state, the town draws visitors to sporting events held at Kansas
State University, cultural and performing arts festivals, and the
Country Stampede Music Festival. The physical beauty of the area is a
magnet for residents and visitors who enjoy outdoor activities
including hunting and fishing, golfing, and hiking. Public hunting
lands overflow with whitetail deer, turkey, and pheasant and draw a
crowd of eager hunters every season. Tuttle Lake, five miles north of
Manhattan, is a favorite of anglers from all over the country. The lake
is stocked with catfish, walleye, crappie bass, bluegill, wipers, and
rainbow trout. Catching and cooking your dinner from Tuttle Lake will
be a red-letter day memory for many vacationers to this area.

Conservatory and Kansas State University. Though most of the area is closed to the public, hikers have the opportunity to enjoy one of three hiking trails near the main entrance and savor one of the last untouched prairies in the country. Open from dawn to dusk, observant hikers can spot deer, coyotes, or turkeys and closely study wildflowers and native grasses.
Everyone loves a zoo and Sunset Zoo is a favorite with people of all ages. Accredited by the American Zoological Association, Sunset Zoo has a summer education program and special resources for teachers. Kids can also celebrate their birthdays at the zoo or bring parents to a slumber party among the wild animals.
Education has always been important to the community of Manhattan. Their public schools ranked among the finest in the state. Above average numbers of students perform well in their academic careers and go on to college. Five institutions of higher learning are located in Manhattan: Kansas State University, Manhattan Christian College, Manhattan Area Technical College, The American Institute of Baking, and the Flint Hills Job Corps Training Center.
Money Magazine placed Manhattan on its list of the top 10 places to retire young. The magazine selected locations to retire young based on criteria such as positive population growth, reasonable housing costs, and a high profile of cultural events.
That’s not all there is to The Little Apple, as Manhattan is affectionately nicknamed. Like its older sister on the east coast, Manhattan has a wonderful selection of shopping areas that delight residents and visitors.
Westloop Shopping Center
Locals know that the Westloop Shopping Center is the perfect destination for renting a movie or doing some quick shopping and grabbing a tasty fast food meal. It’s also a good place to linger and enjoy a leisurely meal or embark on a shop-till-you-drop session after which you can slip into the cool, dark, depths of the movie theater to munch popcorn and recover.
Candlewood Shopping Center
Many restaurants here cater to a specific group, like Early Edition. Rather than stay open long hours, this restaurant opens early and offers the ideal site for breakfast meetings, brunch get togethers, or traditional lunch dates. That’s just one of the many options shoppers will find at Candlewood. Located on the west side of Manhattan, Candlewood is home to many fine businesses and eating establishments where residents and visitors can meet up and plan a full shopping day. Leave time to catch the big game at Bobby T’s sports bar and grill. Don’t hesitate to make an evening of it - so invite a couple of dozen of your closest friends to join you and support your favorite team. Purple clothing is always in style. There’s something to cover most every occasion at Candlewood Shopping Center.
Seth Childs Shopping Center
If a special gift is what you are looking for, Seth Shopping Center has many unique shops offering items that cannot be found anywhere else in Manhattan. Take home a wonderful antique to accent your home and commemorate your vacation in The Little Apple or have a leisurely meal in one of the fine dining establishments in Seth Shopping Center. The Seth Childs 6 movie complex features theatre seating with complete surround sound. It’s a great place to enjoy an after dinner movie, or an anytime movie.
Manhattan Town Center
Manhattan has a tradition of striding into the future while honoring the past. No better example can be found than in the construction of Manhattan Town Center. When the Hopper building was razed to make way for new construction in 1986, workers saved a rosette from the exterior of the building. In honor of the Hopper Building, the rosette is now the logo of Manhattan Town Center. This single level enclosed area spans more than 392,000 square feet of shops and a food court. It’s not your typical shopping mall – the architecture reflects dignity and feel of the Manhattan Downtown area. A major revitalization project, the tree-lined shopping district is home to more than 60 shops including Christopher and Banks, J.C. Penny, Sears, American Eagle, Randall’s Formal Wear, Foot Locker, and Dillards.
Aggieville
Named for the former Kansas State Aggies, Aggieville was the first shopping center in Kansas and is located just southeast of the Kansas State campus. Like the city itself, Aggieville is proud of its heritage hosting pre and post game sporting events supporting the Wildcats. The glorious Purple of Kansas State University rules on touchdown weekends at Aggieville. The Kansas State Cat Band rocks the crowd into winning mode and families can enjoy a variety of fun activities before the transport buses arrive to take them to the big game. On Halloween night, children of the community and their parents are invited to safe, spooky fun in Aggieville. An entire city block is roped for the Kansas State Homecoming events held every fall. It is a town tradition to gather in Aggieville to watch the little apple drop on the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve. Afterward, they enjoy a hot drink and watch the midnight fireworks. However, no matter what the season, Aggieville has great places to shop.
